Despite Positive Signs at Denny’s and IHOP, Midscale Still Drops

SPARTANBURG, S.C. and GLENDALE, Calif. – The two largest players in the midscale restaurant segment reported a positive increase in same store sales, despite the segment's continued contraction.

GLENDALE, Calif.—Last week Thursday DineEquity Inc. (NYSE: DIN), the parent company of Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar and IHOP restaurants, announced financial results for the first quarter of 2014. Same-restaurant sales in the United States grew 3.9 percent over 1Q 2013 at IHOP while dropping 0.5% at Applebee's.

Denny’s Sales Continue to Climb in First Quarter

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Denny's Corporation (Nasdaq:DENN) reported on April 28 that same restaurant sales in the United States increased 1.8 percent in its first quarter ending March 26, 2014. Denny's company-owned restaurants increased in same restaurant sales by a grand 3.2 percent compared to a quite respectable 1.5 percent increase in domestic franchised restaurants.

GLENDALE, Calif. – The parent company of IHOP, DineEquity Inc. (NYSE:DIN), announced last Wednesday that IHOP same-restaurant sales growth for 2013 increased by 2.4 percent over 2012.
