BikeCaffe Settles with California Commissioner for Selling Unregistered Franchises

California's Commissioner of Business Oversight reached a settlement with Ralph Massetti and his franchise development firm, The Franchise Builders, for selling BikeCaffe franchises on the internet that were not registered or exempt according to state franchise regulations. Founder Will Shakesheff, chief franchise operations officer, was also named in the state's action against the franchisor.

California Governor Vetoes Franchise Bills

California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed two franchise bills a month ago, intended by sponsors to make it easier for franchisors to do business and to sell franchises during expositions in the Golden State. Strong supporters for AB 2637 and AB 1782 included the International Franchise Association, the Coalition of Franchisee Associations and the State Bar of California's Franchise Law Committee.

Commissioner Denies Registration for Media360, Orders Cease and Desist

LOS ANGELES – The California Department of Business Oversight Commissioner issued a cease and desist order in June against Media360 and its sole managing partner Reid S. Johnson for failing to disclose in its franchise registration document previous enforcement action against the franchisor from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

California Today Converts to New Electronic Portal; CALEASI Replaced

LOS ANGELES – Beginning at 12:00 noon on June 18, 2014, franchisors will be required to file and submit payment for franchise registration applications and exemption notices, under the Franchise Investment Law, by using the department’s self-service portal.
